TML Biff Barnes Highlight Reel - April 2009

=================================================
After a full year holdout, Biff Barnes' agent
Scrod Bored-Us and the TML came to an agreement
on a 5-year reporting contract, with performance
bonuses and "A-Rod-type" perks.
=================================================

It's a Wombatty Month!

The Walla Walla Wombats (27-7) put up the TML's
best record in opening the 2009 season. They
played .882 ball on the road! They did it with
both pitching (league-leading 2.26 ERA) and
offense (league-leading 197 runs scored). David
Wright (.321, 11-0-4, 28 RBI) and Alex Rodriguez
(.333, 12-0-4, 21 RBI) led the attack. Cole
Hamels (5-2. 2.78, *two* 1-hitters), A.J. Burnett
(5-1, 2.17), Ryan Dempster (4-1, 2.31), Jeremy
Guthrie (4-0, 3.04) and Cliff Lee (3-2, 1.66)
formed a *deep* starting staff. Closer Jonathan
Papelbon (1 RW, 9 SV, 0.53) remained their "Ace"
closer.

The Wombats had to hold off the Danny Way Diamonds,
who reeled off 17 straight home victories, setting
an all-time TML "Home Cooking" perfect April record!
A rougher road campaign (6-11) left the Diamonds 4
GB. The Madison Danes (22-12) remain in contention
at only 5 GB. The defending TML Champs and "new
look" Arkansas Travelers (11-23) sunk to the Ruth
basement.

In the Steinmetz, the Valparaiso Drench (25-9) ran
out to an unexpected early 8-game lead, playing .700+
ball both home and road! The Drench were led by
"Pitcher of the Month" Cory Wade (see below) and
runner-up Felix Hernandez (5-0, 2.85). The Drench
went 9-0 in 1-run games!

Over in the Atmospheric Conf. in the Gatto, the
Rensselaer Strikers (21-13) emerged with a slim
lead over the well-rested Maine Liners (20-14)
and the Beverly Hillbillies (19-15). In the Gehrig,
the Rocky Mountain Chinooks (23-11) bolted out of
the gate (playing .765 ball on the road), building
an early 5-game lead over the Toxins (18-16).
Chinook Tim Lincecum tossed the season's first no-
hitter (see below) at Carolina! Toxin Greg Maddux
(4-1, 2.81) continues to work his "magic."

Oklahoma's Magglio Ordonez leads the TML in batting
at a lofty .401. Duluth's Brad Hawpe ("Player of
the Month"; see below) leads the league in Runs(34)
and RBI(37). Teammate Miguel Cabrera leads in HR(13).
Rensselaer's Brian McCann is on a 13-game hitting
streak.

In pitching, Walla Walla's Cliff Lee leads the TML
in ERA at 1.66. Maine's John Danks leads in wins
(6-1). Rocky Mountain's C.C. Sabathia leads in
whiffs (60). The early saves leader is Valparaiso's
Cory Wade ("Pitcher of the Month"; see below), with
13 SV and a RW.

Below are some awards and tid-bits from April

TML Trivia: The Maine Liners set a new all-time
TML record for going the latest into the start
of a new season with a 0-0 record ---> 24 days,
20 hours, 19 minutes.

There was apparently an extended Spring Training,
along with some "glitches" in Greyhound Bus
scheduling, lost equipment, misspellings of a
number of players' names on their new uniforms,
along with some home stadium snafus.

Previous 0-0 record: 23 days, 12 hours, 10 min.
by Maine(2007), Susquehanna(2006), Mansion Hill
(2004,2000,1997,1996).

Up next ... May highlights!
